First In Class: Lenovo Scores Perfect 100 on Human Rights Campaign Index

We are very proud to share that Lenovo scored a perfect 100 on this index, which measures how well corporations embrace differences amongst its workforce, specifically from the Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender (LGBT) community. What makes this recognition more special is that this is Lenovo’s first year participating in the HRC-CEI Index.

School Days: Tips for Mom When the Kids Head Back to School

It’s that time of year again: we’ve got our class assignments, school supply lists, and shopping excursions for those all-important back-to-school fashions. Whether the kids are starting kindergarten or finishing high school, the start of a new school year is an exciting, yet stressful, time for parents and kids. For successful working moms, the stress can be compounded by the competing responsibilities of work and home. The good news is, it doesn’t have to be so bad. Here are some tips that I’ve learned to make things easier.

  1. Plan Ahead: We’ve all read about the importance of parental feedback and guidance in a child’s scholastic achievement. Schedule time throughout the year with teachers to review each child’s progress, and keep the appointment. Your kids will know you care, and they may just get a lesson in the importance of time management and responsibility to others.
  1. Communicate: Make sure the kids know that, although Mom would love to attend every recital, ball game, or quiz bowl event, sometimes there will be conflicts.
  1. Improvise: When an opportunity in your schedule opens up, do something special with the kids.
  1. Take care of yourself: As a successful working Mom, you’ve got two jobs. We can’t take care of others if we don’t take care of ourselves, so pencil in some time for your own favorite activities.

Remember, it’s all about work-life flexibility. With proper planning and communication we can be all-stars in the boardroom and at home by being able to flex between our personal and professional lives We’ve got this!

Lenovo Announced as Finalist for PR News CSR Awards

Lenovo has been named a finalist to receive the PR News Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Award in three categories: Non Profit/Corporate Partnership, Corporate-Community Partnership and Diversity Communications. The awards honor the most outstanding communications efforts that exhibit an understanding of the power of CSR in public relations. Winners will be announced at the PR News Awards Luncheon on March 15 at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C.

“The PR News CSR Award nominations underscore Lenovo’s commitment to empowering our employees and the communities we serve,” says Yolanda Lee Conyers, vice president of human resources worldwide and chief diversity officer at Lenovo. “Diversity is a core business strategy at Lenovo and the educational and cultural initiatives being recognized are just a few examples of our focus in these areas.”                              Lenovo Award

In the ‘Diversity Communications’ category, Lenovo is being honored for its unique company culture that was captured in the 2014 book, The Lenovo Way. Written by two female Lenovo executives, Gina Qiao and Yolanda Lee Conyers, the book reveals many of the behind-the-scenes challenges involved in building a culture that embraces diversity as a core strength.

Lenovo is also a finalist in the Non Profit/Corporate Partnership and Corporate-Community Partnership categories for a unique business/school partnership with the National Academy Foundation (NAF) called the Lenovo Scholar Network. The Lenovo Scholar Network centers on a robust mobile app development curriculum and delivery program for high school students at NAF academies in the US. As part of the partnership, Lenovo provides ThinkPad laptops and YOGA tablets for students to design and develop mobile apps and create business plans to take their apps to market.

Making Time for Family This Holiday Season

As we head into the busiest time of year, both personally and professionally, I can’t help but feel a little overwhelmed at the thought of it all. It is so easy to get caught up in everything we need to do – all the appointments and deadlines for work before everyone goes on vacation, making sure we get our Christmas shopping done, getting the decorations up, planning the menu for the big Christmas dinner, the list goes on and on – that we sometimes forget to slow down and appreciate the season and the time we get to spend with our families and friends.

As a busy, working mom, I know how hard it can sometimes be to find the time to enjoy the holidays with my child, especially since they are getting older and are very busy themselves with their own activities and friends. So I’ve put together a list of simple, fun holiday activities that you can enjoy with your families…without all the stress.

  1. Check out the Christmas lights in your own neighborhood – This is super easy. All you have to do is walk out your front door and tour your neighborhood streets’ festive light displays. If your own street doesn’t have the most exciting decorations, a simple internet search will tell you where the best Christmas lights in your city can be found.
  2. Christmas movie night – Break out the hot cocoa, delicious holiday desserts, and Christmas pajamas and settle on the couch with your favorite Christmas movie.
  3. Decorate the house together – This is a favorite for small children, but if you have teenagers, they may give you a hard time about this one. Give it 5 minutes and they will forget all about how “lame” it is and they will be reminiscing about holidays past right along with you…my boys always enjoy hanging up ornaments on our Christmas tree that they made when they were little. Whether you celebrate Christmas, Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, or any other holiday, this is a great way to spend some quality time with your kids that they’ll remember for years to come. Points if you can get them to listen to holiday music, too.
  4. Bake Christmas cookies together – To make it really easy, you can buy pre-made cookie dough and let the kids decorate with icing and sprinkles however they want. Or if you have a famous family recipe, now is the perfect time to teach the next generation. We have a tradition every year of decorating gingerbread houses. You can pick up the kits at a craft store and assemble. The boys still can’t help themselves and nibble as they decorate the houses.
  5. Serve the community – Another favorite with children is to find a project to serve others. We have a tradition of providing gifts to families in need, feeding the homeless, or providing blankets to the homeless during the cold winter days. Serving and giving to others is really what the holidays are all about and it is such a joy to watch my boys grow their charitable hearts.

The great thing about all these activities – you can tailor them to any holiday you celebrate this time of year. So, what are your favorite holiday activities to enjoy with your families?

 

Empowering Our Girls to Choose STEM Careers

Taking care of myself means taking time away from work — and not feeling guilty about it.

I just returned from an incredible two-week vacation where I was totally ‘checked out’ from work.  It took a lot to completely unplug and I must admit it has taken a while not to feel a twinge of guilt about it.  However, early in my career I learned the hard way that if I don’t take care of myself — then my body will make me pay for it.

Too many women in the workforce, especially leaders with company wide responsibilities, find it difficult to completely step away from work.  When we don’t take a much needed break, we can end up stressed out, ineffective and not a good person to be around.

1.  Give all your responsibilities to a trusted team member and allow them to step up and take leadership. Your vacation is an opportunity to develop a direct report,  by giving them a chance to step up and lead during your absence. It can be a win/win for you and your company.

2.  Thank your team members for honoring your time off in advance.  Sent out a note to let everyone know that you’re taking time off and it’s important that you have the space to relax.  And return the favor by not disturbing others when they are on vacation.

3.  Turn off the cell phone, set an ‘out of office message’ and plan to have a wonderful break.  It’s empowering to step away from work and only focus on the fun things you want to do.  Use your precious time off to reflect, celebrate and totally engage with family and friends

Five Things Not to Do When Working in China

My passion for diversity started at a very young age; it was in my blood. I knew what it felt like to be treated as acheter du cialis en ligne an outsider, and I wanted nothing more than to create a climate in which everyone had a voice and a place at the table. So when the opportunity to lead the culture integration of Lenovo through the acquisition of the IBM PC division and its iconic ThinkPad product line, I was up to the challenge. As a Chinese company newly entering the global marketplace, Lenovo’s entire future as a global company depended on it.

Although my intentions were good, after my first few months on the job, my Chinese colleagues saw me as part of the problem I’d been hired to fix. You see, my Western style of doing business was not understood or well received. I wasn’t doing what was needed to make a connection. I needed to focus on understanding their work styles first and then adapt mine to fit. I reasoned that being on the ground with my colleagues in China day-in and day-out could make a huge difference.

So I decided to move my entire family to China for three years in order to learn how to operate within an Eastern culture. The experience was invaluable because it also helped me to translate cultural nuances for my Western colleagues. Over time, I saw a change in how they viewed me. They realized that I was open to learning from them, and that we were all in it together, working toward common goals.

Here are five behaviors I learned not to do when working in China; they made all the difference for me:

  1. Don’t cancel meetings. When you schedule a meeting with a Chinese person and then cancel, that shows disrespect. If you make a request for their time, do everything you can to keep the meeting.
  1. Don’t be vague. Chinese executives like an email inviting them to attend a meeting to be directed only to them, not as part of a group, and for the purpose of the meeting to be clearly stated. Prepare an agenda detailing what you would like to cover and what you expect from them.
  1. Don’t speak harshly or bluntly. Using the word “disagree” comes across as too strong and disrespectful to the Chinese. In general, when you don’t agree with someone, the matter must be handled with the utmost sensitivity, and mixed with praise and gentle suggestions for improvement.
  1. Don’t act uninterested. When interacting with Chinese colleagues, especially those who are developing their English-speaking skills, repeat what they say to show you understand their point of view.
  1. Don’t do things the way you always do them. Stretch out of your comfort zone and adapt the behaviors of your colleagues. I learned a few key words in Mandarin to show respect for my Chinese colleagues and their culture. Through this process, I got a deeper understanding and appreciation for their culture.
